Q: What engines would fit in a 1983 Mazda rx7?
I have a 1983 Mazda rx7 and want to replace the engine what all engines would fit in this?
A: Everything from a turbo rotary to a V-8 Chevy or Ford. http://grannys.tripod.com/1stgen.htm
Q: In a 1993 RX7, 5th gear synchro grinds. What happens if i prolong the fixing of the 5th gear? Can i wait?
I am wondering if anything else will be damaged if i prolong fixing my 5th gear synchro on my rx7…can i wait it out and use as much of it’s life till it breaks? or do i have to replace it to prevent damage from other parts? what are the safety risks, too?
A: With the clutch pedal in-shift into second…then quickly into fifth. No grinding, because the syncros are aligned, by the second gear shift.
Q: What’s the benefit of doing a 1993 Rx7 rotary engine with an ls1 engine?
I’ve seen some videos on youtube of some rx7’s with a v8 ls1 engine. They sound sick (in a good way).
A: both have their highs and lows first the ls1 pros: more dealer support and factory performance parts, more torque, easier hp gains, higher hp capability, and longevity (this motor can go longer then the rotary without needing a rebuild). ls1 cons: heavy, low redline (compared to rotary), expensive. rotary pros: high redline capability (15k plus if build and tuned right), cheap (compared to ls1), greater hp:liter ratio, need more power just bolt on more rotors. rotary cons: heavy (compared to the ls1), need a rebuild very often even in stock form, not as reliable as other motors due to high rpm… all in all both are evenly matched if it is for street use build a 3 or 4 rotor but have a back up engine or car for when it comes time to rebuild… if it is for racing only then the ls1 shines for its greater reliability with high hp numbers and low rpm torque
Q: what should my first upgrades be to my 87 rx7 turbo II?
i have a 87 turbo II rx7 twin rotary. it is all stock just has rims and a dual exhaust. not sure what the brand is. i dont have much money but i want to make this into a 300-350 hp vehicle. what should my first upgrades to it be?
A: A new ECU chip and a boost controler will do alot. Change the spark plugs and wires and have the car tuned up. Get a cold air intake and bigger intercooler. This will get you very close to the 300HP mark and the cost is not much. Nice ride!
Q: how many catalytic converters should a 1988 RX7 have?
i have a 1988 RX7 GXL and it has no cat’s i was wondering how many i should have. it has 1 exhaust its a straightpipe to be exact. and it has a magna flow.
A: The factory system had three, one main converter (with air pipe) and two pre catalytic converters.
If you can pass smog tests now don’t worry about it.
I have added a link for the stock front pipe with converters.
Q: Would a 2nd Generation Rx7 be a good car to buy for a college student?
I really like this car a lot and was wondering if its a pretty reliable/quick car (turbo model). Are there any common problems to be aware of about this car?
A: Ask yourself this: how comfortable are you at being your own mechanic? Not many shops have the expertise and capabilities to care for a rotary properly, in addition to being honest about it. What you get out of a rotary engine depends on what you put into it. If you let it warm up for 10-15 minutes on every cold start and redline it once a week, it will last forever. They use oil by design, roughly 1 quart every 3000 miles (depends on throttle position, more gas uses more oil)
With meticulous care, 400,000 miles without a rebuild can be achieved on a N/A 13B engine because there are only 3 moving parts inside the engine.
If you want a get in and go car, a RX7 is not for you. If you’re not familiar with maintaining a rotary engine, you should look it up on wikipedia and then head over to www.rx7club.com to read the FAQs.
Q: 1988 Rx7 that stalls out in the middle of driving. After i turn it off and restart it, it goes 2 miles repeat?
any ideas on what it could be?
Update: The next day i put in fuel injector cleaner and filled the tank with premium and so far so good. Thanks to the gentleman with the first answer, i will try that too.
A: i don’t think you’re going to get too many good answers on this because rx7s have rotary engines, if you want some real professional help go to rx7club.com and sign up, ask your question there. they are EXTREMELY helpful
Q: My 85 rx7 gsle died when i was warming it up its a carb and a rotary engine What is it? Its not battery or alt?
It was running for maybe a minute and then i lost all electrical. As soon as i turn the key to accessories i lose my clock which only works when the key is either out of the ignition or when its in the first position. Its not my battery or alternator ive checked those already. It wont turn over now and jumping it gave it a charge so now my lights work but it still wont turn over.
A: ignition switch????
Q: How difficult a job is it to replace the engine on a RX7 FD ?
My engine is blown and Im planning to replace it with a reconned engine. If I get a proper experienced garage to do it,, how long would it take to get done ? Around how much would it cost in labour ?
A: sign up on www.rx7club.com and remember the first rule
NEVER take your car to a mechanic, only to a rotary shop like the RX7 Store (www.rx7store.net). A list of good shops is in the forum archives somewhere. While on the forums, I’d suggest grabbing a copy of the shop manual too, it’s worth its weight in gold!
All in all, an engine swap isn’t TOO difficult to do, especially if you’re swapping in the same engine. If you’re good with tools and have a good socket set, wrenches and an engine crane (not necessary, but it makes things a LOT easier), you could easily do it yourself.
I did an auto to manual conversion on my FC with the help of a friend that I met through the forums. It wasn’t complicated or ridiculously difficult, just time consuming. The only thing we had to be creative with was making 350 Ft.lbs of torque to get the flywheel nut off since my impact wrench topped out at 240ft.lbs
What exactly is wrong with your engine? I’m looking for a FD engine for a project and was curious what sort of shape yours is in. If you could, please email or PM me on the rx7club (username Akagis_white_comet)
Most of all, just remember that your fellow rotary owners are here to help.

Q: do i need to replace the apex seal in my rx7?
looking to get an rx7, the guy said that the engine leaks a very small amount of water when it is running on the top of the engine. could this be the apex seal or what? he said it starts and runs just fine though. other than that the car is perfect and he only wants 1000 for it. what do you think? thanks.
A: No this is not an apex seal problem, but labor wise it might as well be. The seals of the chambers is leaking. To replace these requires a complete engine tear down. There is just no easy way to do this.
The only short cut is to drop in a Japanese Domestic Market Engine (JDM). But these are not cheap either.
But for about one grand, I would give it some thought. Depending on your skills, shop space and tools, maybe it could be a good deal.
But if you have to hire the work out, I would pass.
Q: will the 13b engine from a 85 rx7 gsl-se fit in a 88 rx7 convertable?
Have a 85 mazda rx7 gsl-se with major body problems and want to put the engine in a 88 mazda rx7 convertable. Is the swap possible?
A: Yup it sure is, the motor in the 85 is the same as the ones in the 88 with the 88 also avaliable with the turbo variant. Just make sure you also swap the comp and wiring from the 85 motor so you dont get any electrical gremlins that could come from using mismatched wires and ecu’s. Not 100% sure but the trans from the 88 should be ok for the 85 motor. Also i cant remember if the radiator and hoses on the 88 are the same so ul need to check that.
Hope this helps goodluck!
Q: Any potential problems in a 1989 Rx7 Turbo II?
i just bought a 1987 RX7 turbo II and i hasnt been started up for 8 years and now just got running. has about 111XXX miles. what should i check? and how do i do a fuel system flush?
A: Its an RX7 meaning that it is required to burn tons of oil even in perfect running condition. Rotary engines must burn lots of oil to perform properly.
You should sell it and get something with a piston engine~ you’ll have better performance, fuel economy, longevity and won’t spend as much on oil.
Q: are there conversion motor mounts from a 12a to a 13b for an 85 rx7?
i have an 85 rx7 with a 12a motor in it, and i would like to convert to an 88 rx7 engine with a 13b fuel injection turbo.
A: The actual motor itself will swap right in. I would still take some 2nd gen mounts in case. Dont forget the 1st gen 7 did have a fuel injected 13b for 2 years in the 1984-1985 GSL-SE model, so it will fit fine. PLent of guys over on rx7club have done the swap and could give complete step by step detail of how to go through it. Dont forget to get the tranny and rear end from the Turbo II car. They will hold up to the power much better most likely.
Q: How to check wheel bearings on 88 RX7 conv.?
Want to change the wheel bearing on a 88 RX7 conv .Can anyone give me details on how to do it I took the wheel off and remember they have independent suspension the haynes manual I have don’t show a detailed breakdown I can’t even see any bearings .They are making a grinding noise.
Travis logged into my RX7 site i’m a member same ID bot can’t get manual any help Thanks RXS rule
A: First thing, sign up on www.rx7club.com and download the 86-88 Factory Service Manual in the Second Generation section (it’s free!). The whole process is outlined in proper detail, with tolerances and proper tightening torque. If you have any questions, hit search, type in “wheel bearings” on the RX7 club and you’ll find an answer.
Last, toss the Haynes manual into a nearby fireplace. If you get stuck on it, let me know!
Q: why does my shifter on my manual rx7 vibrate and make noise when i accelerate?
it is a 1990 mazda rx7 non turbo manual transmission with 150,000 original miles.
it vibrates in nuetral also when i rev
A: If the engine in neutral is smooth when you rev, and the vibration is only when in gear and accelerating, then something is wrong with the clutch disc / pad.
