Q: Would you rather have a Ford Mustang or Volkswagen Beetle?
Heres the catch…
Would you rather get a free Mustang that gets 10 miles per gallon OR
A free Volkswagen Beetle that got 25 miles per gallon?

A: The Mustang, assuming it isn’t leaking gas because it shouldn’t be getting 10 mpg.

Why does the Mustang only get 10 mpg?
I had an the old 5.0 V8 engine, which is much less efficient than the vehicles today, and still got about 18city / 25 highway mpg, overall.

Q: What car seat would fit best in a Volkswagen Beetle?
Does anyboy have a really tiny car? I am wondering if you could tell me which car seat would fit best in my New Beetle. I love my little car not to mention I can’t get rid of it because it’s only a years old, so if you have/had a little car and had good luck with a car seat let me know. Thanks.

A: It is a tight fit, but you CAN fit car seats in there, and most should work. The trick is getting a car seat tech to help you (call your police station and ask about car seats, they’ll direct you to whom you need to speak with.) And realizing that while doable, it certainly is NOT as easy as a bigger car. I have a 2 door ‘99 Honda Civic, have had it since my now 3 year old son was born. It definitely has not always been easy, but there really was no other option for us. Installing the seat in the middle can help, so that perhaps the child’s seat might fit through the middle of the 2 front seats rather impeding one of them from moving back any. If you have a convertible I would definitely put the top down to install the seat!! If not, prepare yourself for some grunting and squishing. :) Check your manual, most cars do nOT allow using LATCH in the middle. You can only use the middle seatbelt. Actually, do beetles even have a middle seatbelt? LOL If not, put the seat ont he passenger side and whoever sits there will have to deal with having no room. ;)

A car seat tech on a forum reminds us all the time that she has successfully gotten a Britax Wizard (about same size as Britax Marathon) into her husband’s Porsche 911. So it CAN be done in a beetle! Realize too, that the seat will take up more space for a newborn, but if you get a convertible seat, once baby can sit up and hold her head up, you can put it more upright giving the front seats more room. I don’t think I’d even get an infant carrier seat – its not a required stage in car seats and would be a massive pain to get in and out of such a small car. It would be MUCH easier to get a convertible seat that will fit a newborn (more on that later) and just put baby in and out. I used to put my son in by either climbing into the back seat with him or holding him in the front seat, and scooting my seat all the way back so I could put him in his.Either was easier to do than trying to squeeze the carrier in and out every time. there’s other reasons I HATE carriers, but more later.

OK – not all convertible car seats will fit a newborn, here’s the best 2 for your situation:
Cosco Scenera – $40-$50 at Walmart, Target and KMart. Great deal for what it is. Rear faces to a whopping 35lbs, which is important b/c kids should stay rear facing as long as possible, the American Academy of Pediatrics says keep them rear facing preferably for their first 2 years of life. Then it goes to 40lbs front facing. It won’t last child as long forward facing as some others, but for $40, its a great deal.

A solution that will last longer is the Evenflo Triumph Advance. Its a rather wide seat, but that shouldn’t matter much, no one’s going to fit back there with the baby no matter what seat you put in! The Evenflo Triumph Advance (not the original Triumph, make sure it says Advance) is a great seat. $150 version at Babies R Us has padding similar to Britax seats, top slots of 17″, harnesses to 35lbs rear facing, and 50lbs forward facing. $120 Walmart version just has little less plush padding. Wide open belt path, easy to install, though it doesn’t have built in lockoffs. The harness adjusts at the front of the car seat, you don’t have to take the car seat out of the car just to raise/lower the straps. It’s one of only 2 seats that does this (The Britax Boulevard is the other, I believE), and it has infinite harness adjustment so the harness always fits perfectly until its outgrown. No more tugging straps to tighten them either. You tighten and loosen the harness using knobs on the side of the seat. As a major bonus, it can be used in a recline position even in forward facing mode. Awesome for kids who still sleep in the car. I LOVE THIS SEAT! LOL My son, who is too big for every other car seat at Walmart has the same amount of room in this as the Britax Marathon.

As you’re shopping, Remember these rules:
1)the BEST seat is the one that fits your child, fits your car, and will be used correctly 100% of the time. (This is why convenience features DO make a difference and ARE worth the money! If its easy to use, you’re more likely to use it correctly.
2)Children should stay rear facing AS LNOG AS POSSIBLE!!!! The 20lbs/1 year rule is outdated and provides a bare minimum for turning kids forward facing. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration both recommend keeping kids rear facing as long as possible, up to the limits of their seat, preferably until at least 2 years of age. For good reason: A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 4 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age. A child’s vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone. In other countries, rear facing 2 – 3 – 4 year olds is standard, they understand that its safer. Here, we turn them as soon as we get to, seeing it as a right of passage thing or something. Ridiculous. Most convertible seats have a 30lbs rear facing limit, Cosco/Dorel/Safety1st/Eddie Bauer seats rear face to 35lbs, Britax rear faces to 33lbs.
3)Once you do turn them forward facing, they need to stay in a 5 point harness as long as possible. 4 years/40lbs is the minimum for riding in a booster, and most 4 year olds have no business using one yet. If they can’t sit upright for an entire trip, they need the harness of a car seat still. And, even if they do sit properly, a 5 point harness is safer, so you want to keep them in one as long as possible. This is important to consider b/c most car seats only forward face to 40lbs. My son just turned 3, and is in the 95th% for height and weight – 40″ tall and weighs 41lbs. He outgrew the 40lbs seats shortly after his 2nd birthday. It was a total waste of money. He now has a Britax Marathon, which goes to 65lbs, and will be able to fit it for some time yet. If I’d have bought it when he was born, I could have had one car seat this whole time instead of the 3 I wasted money on. They are more expensive for many reasons, this is one.

Q: How many miles is too many miles when looking to purchase a used Volkswagen Beetle?
If i wanna buy a used beetle, at what milage is too many miles on a beetle? trying to avoid buying one only to have a quick breakdown of a part if that makes sense.

A: Depends on the age of the car and HOW MUCH IT WAS MAINTAINED. My car has almost every nut and bolt and part rebuilt or replaced – so it is as good as new. If it is just driven and gas is the only thing put in, a 2 year old car can be junk.

Q: What is the most common problems in Volkswagen beetle?
My Mom And Dad just Surprised Me With a New Car Well it’s a Volkswagen bettle 2005 model and We have Never Owned one does anyone have any advice or know their weak points? and how long have they been known to last it has around 100,000 miles and it’s diesel fuel.

A: You got the best hon, they are bullet proof and has the best fuel mileage with the TDI engine. Is almost head to head with a Hybrid.

My wife had 2 Beetles an 03 and now an 07. I like the 07 and is very reliable. I wanted the 07 TDI but was too expensive. My friend had a TDI with his beetle, he ran from Wichita KS to Dallas TX and back with one tank of fuel. The 07 has Tiptronic and I drove a TDI (TurboDiesel Direct Injection) with the Tiptronic and fell in love with it. But we settle for the 5Cly 2.5 Audi engine since it was 10,000 less than the Diesel.

Diesel is pricey, but still using so little that is worth to have it. To break even with the gasoline counterparts, the fuel has to be about a Dollar difference. The TDI pulls like a V8 and is fun to drive. With the right mods, that engine is one of the preferred engine to run with Vegetable Oil (aka Biodiesel).

With proper care these cars last a very long time. Just when they break they are pricey, so do the maintenance and take good care of it. The engine oil used is Synthetic so make sure you get that. That type of oil is pricey but is so well worth it that is nothing. Here is a link with the need it oils and read the Owner’s Manual it pays to know your car.

Look in he Manual for the right spec of oil and go shopping with this form, you can get some good deals out there.

I would love to get my hands on one of those bugs. They worth gold !

Enjoy and tell your parents a big thank you ! That is one of the best gifts ever !

Q: Where can I get a Volkswagen Beetle (old style) at cheapest?
I am looking for a Beetle my 8-year-old son who’s really into Volkswagen Beetles. Sure, he doesn’t get to drive it, but he’ll get to ride in it.

A: www.Hubcapcafe.com
www.aircooled.net
www.thesamba.com
www.chirco.com
www.jbugs.com
www.volksworld.com
www.traderonline.com
That should keep you busy for a while.

Q: How much should an 1998 Volkswagen Beetle cost?
Well I just want to know how much one should cost. I saw one that was 1,000 is that good for a beetle?

A: ‘98 was the first year of the new bug, I would say that $4,000 to $7,000 would be a fair price, check out craigs list to find out how much there going for in your area.

Q: anyone drive a volkswagen beetle between the years of 1997-2005? are they reliable?
i want to have a volkswagen beetle by February 2008. i just started a new job and im a full time student with an 11 month old daughter so i know moneys gonna be tight. i do have a lot of help from my family however. ive always ALWAYS wanted a volkswagen and now i see that actually owning one is becoming more realistic, im trying to plan everything out…but anyway, is there anyone out there that owns or once owned a volkswagen beetle? one of the more recent ones. they seem spacious and reliable but i would love to hear it from someone that would know hands on. thanks :-)

A: The big issue with the New Beetle is not the mechanical (engine, transmission), but the electrical issues. Window regulators are known to have cable failures or problems with the nylon window to regulator hasp and known to break; there is a 7 year/unlimited milage campaign to deal with the issues of this; another issue is the coil packs on turbo model vehicles, they also are known to fail; the brake light switch is another sore point, they sometimes stick in the on position, thus draining the battery or worse, don’t engage at all and you cannot shift the vehicle out of the park position. Other items that are a sore point headlight and tail light bulb replacements (recall campaign for Beetles for headlight harness replacements for 98 to 2002? due to burnout or open circuit issues); glove box doors that break; center console lid latch failures; inside door panel colour fading away; etc.

If I were going to purchase a New Beetle, I would purchase only a very late model one; 2004 up, earlier ones have had too many issues. (although by this time, most have had the various updates and recalls done).

Late model ones also have side and curtain air bags to protect you in an accident and although the New Beetle shares the basic floor pan with the 2 door Golf, it does have an additional re-inforcement, so it does better in frontal crashes than the Golf or Jetta of the same year.

On balance though, if I were going to get a VW, I’d probably opt to get a Jetta where the resale value would be higher and it be an easier vehicle to sell, if need be. The additional rear seat room and larger trunk space would be nice too.

If dependability were the most important item; then, perhaps other choices might be better. A late model Honda Civic, a Toyota Corolla, or a Mazda 3, would be excellent choices.

The Civic has known reliability, good fuel economy, decent handling, but not very exciting. The Toyota Corolla can be bought for less money than the Honda or Civic, highly reliable, the best with gas and the most pleasant ride. The Mazda is by far the best handling of the bunch (save a Civic SI), has sedan or hatchback availability, the highest resale value (hatchback), but the economy only matches the VW.

So, there you have it in a nut shell. Hope this helps, a car nut.

Q: Can I replace the fenders of my Volkswagen Beetle with those of an older model?
I want to give my 1970 Volkswagen Beetle a more vintage look. The stock bumpers and fenders (the humps above the wheel well) I would like to replace with those of some of the earlier models, i.e. the chrome bumpers from the early 60’s -67’s models and the earlier fenders which have a horn grill beneath the headlight (So the horn can be better heard, I guess.) These choices are purely aesthetic for me, but are there any unforeseen risks in mixing and matching parts from these models? I know Volkswagens underwent minor changes during their rule of the roads, but would these changes work, or would they simply cause problems?

A: the early fenders will bolt right up no modifacations needed to use the early bumpers you will need these conversion brackets : http://www.mamotorworks.com/acvw-1-73-6035.html to mount them correctly

Q: Engine conversion for a 1973 Volkswagen Beetle?
What would be a feasible engine conversion for a 1973 Volkswagen Beetle?

JUST CURIOUS as to what people are doing to these cars today.

A: You can fit the earlier air cooled 911 engine in it. It’ll take some doing but it does fit.About 20 years ago I helped a friend drop a 1978 porsche targa engine in a 66 vw beetle he also did suspension upgrades, trans. etc. It was a really fun project and when it was complete with paint and interior it was beautiful and it was WICKED fast. It was a sleeper that at the time out performed pretty much anything it came up against. Otherwise just find a nice rebuild and drop that in,with the internet you don’t have to look far.
Good Luck and have some fun with!!

Q: Is it hard to find replacement parts for a 1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle?
I am thinking about buying a 1972 Volkswagen Super Beetle. Just wondering how hard it will be to purchase basic replacement parts. Any help in this matter would be great :)

A: not at all. there are tons of internet sites that specialize in everything air cooled volkswagen

http://www.mamotorworks.com/air-cooled-vw-parts.html
http://www2.cip1.com/default.asp
http://www.jbugs.com/

and parts are relatively cheap since they are so abundant

Q: Can you turn a Volkswagen Beetle into an Automatic? If so, about how much would it cost, any sites i can go to?
I have a yellow beetle, im getting a paint job and hoping to make it an automatic, i can drive stick, but i get nervous in traffic and freak.
Can i bring it somewhere to get it turned into an automatic?
How much would i cost?
Anysites i can visit?

A: Yes it is possible and not too difficult but it would be expensive. If you do your sums correctly you will find it cheaper to sell the car and buy an auto rather than carrying out the conversion.

You do not mention if it is a new beetle or an old beetle. If it is an old beetle, you probably will find info on this topic on the following web site

Q: How much volkswagen beetle ?
how much 2007 volkswagen beetle , is first hand and located in Malaysia ?

A: Not sure about Malaysia, but I know of someone who paid $37,000 US. including tax in the Philippines.

Q: How do you fix a secondary air injection on a 2000 volkswagen beetle?
i got a beetle for christmas from my parents, and on saturday, the check engine light went on. we went to autozone and got a check to see what it was. i don’t really understand what’s going on, because i’m not good with car terms, but my dad says that the code is p1444 and it’s the secondary air injection. i think we just need to know where the secondary air injection is or how to fix it. any knowledge that you have would help.

A: If you open the hood the pump is located next to the dipstick where you check your oil. It is round black and it has two black plastic hoses connecting t it. First check the fuses. Then check the connector that connects to the pump. If everything is in place, change the secondary air injection pump. You can buy a used pump on a local salvage yard. They give a 90 day warranty or ebay. To change the pump you have to take out the battery.

Q: what are the basic steps in restoring a 1972 volkswagen beetle?
1 have a 60 day vacation and i want to spend it restoring my ‘72 beetle my dad gave me. i’ve already taken it apart and have started body work -patching the rots everywhere.is it a good idea to replace the steel plates with a thicker gauge 14 instead of the original gauge 16 flooring? i need tips for detailing and the paint work. i’ve thrown out most of the old electrical cables. i’m also puttin in a modest stereo system. i know its gonna be a headache puttin it back so i’ll be needing somebody who’ll coach me and teach me several tricks to put my bug back to its shining glory.

A: With the limited space we have here, there are a few things NOT to overlook.1. The “PAN” of the bug, especially under the battery should be rust free and solid,2. If you are re-doing the electrical, think about “upgrading” to a new style fuse block-instead of that old ceramic fuse crap.3. An alternator is BETTER than a generator.(especially w/ a stereo).4. Replace the shift-rod slider grommet and the square thing that attaches it to the trans.(cannot remember the name)5.Upgrade to a “009″ centrifugal distributor(and a pertronix elect. ignition will make you happy too). There are SO MANY things to do to your bug…I would try to find a good book or website on the subject, there are loads of them to choose from! GOOD LUCK to ya, the VW bug hobby is great and reasonably inexpensive! So, go nuts and have fun with it!!

Q: How do I reset the speedometer on my volkswagen beetle?
I own a 1970 Volkswagen Beetle, and the entire engine has recently been overhauled. How do I set the speedometer to reflect the current mileage of the engine?

A: Hi There

Here is a nice straight forward answer from someone who knows.

First you must remove the Speedometer from the dash. If you are unsure of yourself then give it to a local Speedometer repair house to work on it.

Otherwise you must remove the fuel gauage via the 3 screws. then pry the bezel all the way around until you can remove it and the plastice lens. Remove the two screws on the back and Speedometer should now be free to remove from case.

Turn Speedometer over and notice the Odometer Assembly. There are gears holding every digit in its correct place. Push the Holding gear to the right; this will allow you to rotate the digit to left of that gear freely. Do this with each digit starting from the left until finished.

Reassembly is the reverse steps. The beazel must be rolled onto the case using a heavy large round piece of metal! i have a special tool for all of these things.

I hope this Helps.

It is not illegal to set back or forward your odometer. What is illegal is if you do it with the intent to defraud someone. That is the law.
